Introduction

Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway

84 miles

A journal of our crossing between 3nd August and 5th August 2008
and 10th and 12th April 2009

Having previously got our first two long distance walks under our belt, and having had a year’s sabbatical in 2007 Sheepfellow and his pals were now eager for more of the same. As the limbs had become a we bit rusty over this period, we opted for one of the more ‘gentle’ walks and decided that a trek across Hadrian’s Wall would not only fit the bill magnificently but also stood the chance of improving the historical knowledge of us all along the way.

Worryingly, we had decided to become studious!

This year the walkers group consisted of two ‘veterans’ of previous walks – Martyn and step brother Phil – with our quartet completed by Richard, who had endured our company over many previous day’s outings on the hill. Previous knowledge of each others idiosyncrasies is considered to be an essential requirement of participants.

Readers are reminded that the accounts of our walks is not intended to be a chronicle of the route, but more of a light hearted account of our acquaintances and those experiences that we had along the way. (Prior to commencement, we were all hoping that this years outing would produce the same quality of entertainment and enjoyment for us as our previous outings.)

As stated previously, we had decided on a leisurely pace which would take us 6 days and also afford us the opportunity to get historical at the many places en-route. Again we had arranged for bag to be ferried along the route, this time using  The Walkers’ Baggage Transfer Co.

Unlike previous outings, all bets on us becoming misplaced on this walk were off due to the reputed well signposting en-route. Would we manage to defy the odds yet again..........?

Unfortunately, this walk had to be one of two halves (of 3 days) due to yours truly being struck with illness which required a return home after the first 3 days, and a subsequent period of hospitalisation. Our second 'half' to complete the walk took place during April 2009 when it was a pity that Martyn was unable to join us.
